A traffic ticket may cost you more than a fine and court costs. Insurance premiums can go up and your driver’s license may be taken away. Wisconsin assesses demerit points to drivers convicted of moving violations, beginning on the date of the violation. When 12 or more demerit points are accumulated in one year, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will suspend your driver’s license for at least two months. For more information, see the Wisconsin DOT website.
Criminal charges can have long-term consequences for your future. Anyone charged with a crime, even a “minor” crime, should be represented by an attorney. If you believe you cannot afford an attorney, you should contact the Office of the State Public Defender.
